Phenol formaldehyde resin (A) comprises a mixture (A1) of phenol compound (I), free phenolic monomer, formaldehyde and optionally additionally one/more phenol resin. Phenol formaldehyde resin (A) comprises a mixture (A1) of phenol compounds of formula (I), free phenolic monomer, formaldehyde and optionally additionally one/more phenol resin. R : H, CH2OH or CH2-O-R1; A : H or 1-10C alkyl; R1H or optionally hydroxy substituted 1-10C alkyl (preferably n-butyl); n : 0-10; and m : 0-6. Where: the part of bridge with m = 0 is larger than 35% and the part of bridge with m = 1-6 is smaller than 65%, (both based on the total number of bridge (-CH2(OCH2)m-); the mixture, if A is H, posses an average molecular weight of less than 650 g/mol, and if A = 1-10 C alkyl, posses an average molecular mass of less than (650 +(amount of alkyl-C-atom in residue Ax100) g/mol); in the mixture (I), in which n = 0 and R1 = optionally hydroxy substituted alkyl, is greater than 10 wt.%, based on the total weight of the phenol- formaldehyde resin; in (I) with m = 0 the ratio of ortho-para-configured to ortho-ortho-configured bridge is larger than 1:2 and the portion of para-para-configured bridge -CH2- is less than 20%, based on the total number of phenol core connecting bridge -CH2-; and the proportion of group -CH2-O-R1 (where R1 is optionally hydroxy substituted 1-10C alkyl), to phenolic core is larger than 0.35.
