A transmitter/receiver implements classes of traffic (COF) (105,130,155). For each COF, a wireless local area network communications device has First-In First-Out (FIFO) memories (110,135,160), in which packets to be transmitted are queued. Each COF with packets to be transmitted starts a back-off operation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) An integrated circuit chip for carrying out a wireless local area network communication; (B) and for a method for carrying out a wireless local area network communication.
