The device has a control unit (10) controlling a number of revolutions of an internal combustion engine (11) in a starting mode. An actuating unit (13) for adjusting specified control variable of the control unit by combustion moment of the engine is operated by the control unit. The actuating unit is designed in such a manner that the moment is adjusted by appropriate selection of trigger time-point of the engine in the starting mode. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
