A method for error detection on printed material involves comparison of a reference image with the actual measured image, in which in a first methodological step the reference image immediately after the start of the procedure, is automatically received from the video signal of web observation device during observation and is stored without influencing the flow of the web observation. An automatic reference image photo is generated such that image comparison of the actual recorded reference image with a first recorded reference image takes place, and the reference image photo is spot checked until the image comparison results within an adjustable difference tolerance. In a second comparison step, error recognition is determined with the actual video images recorded by a web observation device and then the recognized errors are displayed on a monitor during the error recognition process. An independent claim is included for an arrangement for an error detection method.
