The method involves applying sand between a wheel and a track of a rail-mounted vehicle from a storage container via an attached pneumatically operated outlet nozzle (23) for varying the sand quantities. A predetermined sand quantity per unit time is applied after measuring an adhesion coefficient, which depends on the beginning of the brake requirement and a measured delay or acceleration of the rail-mounted vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a mechanism for applying sand between a wheel and track of a rail-mounted vehicle.
