The method involves using electrically controllable paint applicators with a satellite positioning measuring system. Satellites (4) are fixed one or more times in areas with a number of satellites which are not sufficient for determining the position of the work apparatus and the work apparatus or movable part (3) of the position measuring system is moved separately over the surface area whereby position data between satellites and the movable part of the measuring system are measured and stored at a sufficient number of positions including the not yet detected positions of the relevant surface area features and the coordinates of the satellites are numerically determined and stored from the stored measured data.
