The detector has an analog to digital converter (ADC) (20) to convert an analog input signal into digital n-bit input signal. Finite response (FIR) filter (21) cancels/amplifies the sub-carriers in the digital signal. A decision unit (23) makes a decision by comparing a defined digital signal quality determined by an evaluation unit with a preset threshold value, and produces a detection signal upon detecting the presence of a preamble. The detector is designed in such a manner that it is provided within a high frequency (HF)-block of a wireless LAN receiver or near to an antenna. An independent claim is also included for a method for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-preamble detection.
