On each side of the unit, outer walls confine largely-airtight chambers. These spaces are effectively sealed against fibers and dust contained in ambient air, and in the air conveying the cotton fibers. The narrowest side of the unit is less than 7 times the narrowest side of the fiber transport channel (1), seen in cross section. Air on both sides of the conveying channel and between the cameras, circulates freely. The unit is fastened to a fiber-opening machine without being fastened directly to the factory floor by additional supports.
