A homogeneous charge compression ignition engine is disclosed which prevents knocking and misfiring when the output is changed and when the load or the air-fuel ratio changes due to one reason or another in operation under a predetermined condition. A controller determines whether or not the air-fuel ratio changes in such a way that there is a possibility that knocking or misfiring occurs by using a map related to the air-fuel ratio and the intake air temperature defines a range in which stable operation of compression ignition of a homogeneous charge is enabled. When the air-fuel ratio indicates that there is a possibility that knocking or misfiring will occur, the controller controls an intake air temperature adjusting member so that the intake air temperature is adjusted based on the map.
