The system has a sensor (1) that is sensitive to the acceleration of a vehicle. A filter device (2) filters an output signal of the sensor, where the output signal represents the resonance vibrations of the vehicle structure. The filter device is connected with a control device (3) that is coupled with a support unit (4), such as airbag and seat belt. The control device processes the output signal of the sensor. An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling a safety system for vehicle passengers.
