The system has a side gusset guide rail system (40) comprising upper and lower folding plates connected with parts of broad walls of packaging units and/or semi-finished products. A middle folding plate is inserted in a side gusset of the units/products in a direction transverse to a longitudinal axis of the units/products. The system (40) has a section in a transport direction of the units/products, and a hopper section (44) for varying distance between two of the plates based on the transport direction of the units/products. An independent claim is also included for an application of a handling system.
