A safety system for the rear of a refuse collecting vehicle which lifts refuse containers has ultrasonic sensors (16) to monitor the lifting area and to activate the safety switch off it a person or object is detected in the lifting area. The safety system supplements the side safety barriers. The detection system is linked to the proximity sensing system which enables the driver to back the vehicle safely to the refuse containers.
