A measured structural variable, particularly the dimension, of a structural component having an effect on a nominal output is determined. The effect of measured variable is quantified relative to the nominal output. The output on at least one operating point of the structural component is measured. The measured variable is varied over a range of values in special measurement region to determine a deviation relative to the determined output. A structural unit in the structural component is replaced with a structural unit having a technical function that corresponds to the measured variable. An independent claim is also included for a fuel injector.
