To clean the heating surfaces of rubbish incinerators and coal-fired boilers, and the like, an explosive mixture partially of a gas is brought into the vicinity of the dirt or baked deposits and scale and exploded. The explosive mixture is carried by a lance (20) into a thin-walled container (25), to be inserted into the hot combustion zone while the plant is operating. The container is inflated by the explosive gas or mixture. The mixture has a fuel gas and an oxidizing agent.
