The method involves monitoring a dangerous area in a sheet delivery of a printing machine by a sensor (40) and carrying out access to the dangerous area via a cross section of the delivery, where the sensor is a surface sensor. Position of an object penetrating the cross section is detected by the sensor and the printing machine is correspondingly activated based on the position and penetration depth of the object into the area. An independent claim is also included for a device for protecting a dangerous area.
