A wire electric discharge machine for machining a work (2) by supplying discharge energy to the space between a wire electrode (1) and the work (2) from a machining power supply (11) while supplying the working fluid to the space from machining liquid nozzles (4a, 4b) thereby generating discharge between them, comprising means for detecting a normal discharge pulse between the wire electrode and the work, means for determining the normal discharge pulse energy from the detected normal discharge pulse, means for storing therein threshold value data for ensuring a specified margin from an operating point upon breakage of a wire electrode determined from the relation between the normal discharge pulse energy and a machining energy preset value under various machining conditions, and means for controlling the machining energy preset value so that the machining operation point approaches the threshold data, whereby the machining productivity is significantly improved.
