The various respiratory modes are determined, selected and used for respiratory disorders according to a patient-specific requirement. The control unit is attached to a sensor for the detection of a physiological parameter and comprises a signal analyzer, an artifact recognition, and adaptation mechanism for change of the artificial respiration mode. A user-defined control device is used for the execution of a pressure adjustment and is instructed to the mode adjustment with a fixed time and adaptive time intervals. The analyzer is controlled for suppression of a mode change during artifact recognition. The analyzer is instructed for recognition of inspiration and expiration phases and exhibits a band-pass filter and comparing unit for consideration of individual patient record, preset parameter and ideal values. An independent claim is included for a procedure for controlling a respirator.
