The circuit has a vector rotator block (20) providing a flux amplitude signal, and a comparator (36) including an output for producing the signal indicative of a comparison result between a set of inputs. One input in the set of inputs is coupled to a reference value for comparison with the amplitude signal. The comparator output is operable to indicate whether the amplitude signal is above or below the reference value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for detecting startup failure in a motor drive system (2) a system for detecting motor startup failure comprising a discontinuation section.
