The device has an arresting unit (4) provided with jaw units (7, 8) and a clamping unit (5) for opening and closing of the jaw units. A guiding unit (3) is designed such that an edge of a plate is attached to it for providing a position reference for the edge. The unit (5) is designed such that the grasping and the releasing of the plate are carried out by the jaw units, where the arresting unit has a small vertical extension.
