The device for the lifting of containers has hooks (9) which without additional devices and/or active or actively operable connecting elements on the spreader engage automatically in the protrusions (11) on the spreader (14) purely through the seating of the spreader on the elevated frame. For the operation of the hooks use is made of the horizontal gap (12) which is formed during the seating or lifting of a non-locked spreader between its support surfaces and setting down surfaces on the elevated frame.
