An illuminator for rescue cutters, e.g. hydraulic shears employed by rescue units to free trapped persons, has a self contained light comprising a housing (5) containing a battery (3), a control circuit, a light (2) and an external switch. The light is fitted directly onto the side of the shears and directly illuminates the cutting area. The light can be bolted or permanently secured to the shears or can be attached via removable fittings such as press tapes. The light can be LEDs and the battery can be rechargeable. A timing control switches off the light after a preset time.
