A burner (11) is supplied with fuel e.g. gas, petroleum through a fuel line (12) having a controllable shut-off valve (13), and with ambient air through an inlet port (15) in an inlet mechanism (14). A gas sensor (16) outputs a signal to close the shut-off valve when combustible gases or aerosols are detected in the ambient air entering the inlet mechanism.
