The navigation device has a position determining unit, electronically stored map data, a data processor for calculating a route to the desired target using the map data, and a display unit to display information provided from the data processor to follow the calculated route. The device has stored therein information regarding road signs and instruction signs provided along streets or other routes. The device is arranged such that at least those signs to be observed along the route are displayed on the display in an appropriate image format.
