A mobile appliance designed as personal computer or mobilephone has a data processing system connected to at least one keypad and a display screen. In the mobile device is arranged an optical scanning system so that the housing of the mobile device has an opening or a window for entrance of the electromagnetic beam of the optical scanning system and that the data processing system is connected together with the keypad (2) to the display screen (3) and to the optical scanning system, so that by using a conversion program stored in the data processor, the characters scanned via the optical scanning system are input by the keypad, or as words selected from the data processor store as keypad-selectable words converted into another language or by using a reference/assignment program stored in the data processor, the scanned characters or graphics are displayed on the screen (3).
