The device has a container (1) for receiving the substance e.g. blood plasma (8) for fractionation. A magnetic field generating mechanism is arranged to produce a magnetic field in a direction perpendicular to the mainstream direction of the blood plasma. The container may be made of plastics, glass or acrylic glass. The magnetic field generating mechanism includes magnets (6) arranged with opposing poles surrounding the container, and aligned symmetrical to the longitudinal axis of the container.
