The vertically disposed thermally insulated outer rim (6) of a radiant heating unit beneath a ceramic hob surface has a thermal sensor (9) embedded in a block (8) in a high thermally conductive material with an evaluation unit (10) by which the temperature of the underside of the ceramic hotplate generated by heating elements (2) is monitored.
