The high speed machine tool has a workpiece spindle (3) on which the workpiece (5) is mounted by means of a mounting piece (4). The machine tool also has a tool carriage (17) on which various tools (18-20) are mounted. The tool carriage can be moved in the radial and axial directions relative to the workpiece spindle. All movements of the tool carriage can be produced by means of linear motors. The radial movement can also be produced by means of a conventional slider mechanism (14) whilst the axial movement only is done by the linear motor. The secondary part of the linear motor has a U-shaped cross-section.
