The appts. has a display showing a target image for a given orientation of a lens blank (14) relative to a base (1). An alignment station (8) is supported by the base supporting and aligning a lens blank relative to a target image. A blocking station (16), supported by the base receives and supports a block (22) in a given orientation relative to the base as established at the alignment station. A transporter moves the lens blank from the alignment station to the blocking station while maintaining the orientation established at the alignment station. The blocking station includes a blocking support for the lens block, a blank support (20) and a delivery unit supplying liquid bonding material between the lens blank and the block. The liquid solidifies on cooling, joining the lens blank and the block to each other.
