The invention relates to a drive device (16) to drive a leaf (12) of a building or site closure, comprising a first element (18) that is to be attached in a stationary manner; a second element (20) that is to be attached to the leaf (12) of the building or site closure; a drive unit (22) for relative movement of the first (18) and the second element (20) with the purpose of moving the leaf (12) of the building or site closure, in addition to a position detecting device (50, 52) to detect whether the leaf (12) of the building or site closure is in a given position. In order to provide a safer drive device, the position detection device (50, 52) has a path sensor (50) that is assigned to both elements (18, 20) and that is especially formed by both elements (18, 20). Based on the relative position of both elements (18, 20), said sensor generates a path or position signal (48) preferably representing a constant monotonous function of said relative position of both elements (18, 20).
