During an initial induction phase, the sensor signal level is measured when a single sheet (2) is detected and then when multiple sheets are detected with one individual sheet being followed by another. A processor (6) is then used to calculate threshold values on the basis of the measured signal levels, so that a distinction can be made between a stack containing n sheets and a stack containing n + 1 sheets, where n =1-3. Following this induction phase, the threshold values can be used to detect single or multiple sheets during a working phase.
