In a cosmetic composition containing an aqueous phase, a combination of at least one oxidation sensitive hydrophilic active principle (a) and at least one maleic anhydride copolymer (b) are used as depigmenting agents. (a) Is ascorbic acid or its derivatives. (b) Comprises at least one maleic anhydride comonomers and at least one of e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl alcohol or styrene.
