A portable device (11) for performing secure transactions with transaction terminals (12), including first means (111, 113) for performing a secure transaction using first transaction resources stored in a first memory (114), and means (115) for contactless communication with said transaction terminals. The device includes means (116) for interfacing with a smart card (13) including second means (131, 133) for performing a secure transaction, and means (117) for selecting one of the first secure transaction means and the second secure transaction means, with particular reference to data on the presence and validity of said card, whereby a transaction may be performed either by the portable device (11) or by said smart card (13).
