Preparing a peptide extract (A) of Spirulina comprises: (a) separating lipids and proteins of the microalgae, as dry powder, by extraction of the lipid phase, using a polar solvent or oil (synthetic or from plants), then separating lipids from a phase (X) containing the proteins; subjecting (X) to enzymatic hydrolysis to form a peptide extract; and optionally purifying this extract. An independent claim is also included for (A) produced by the new method comprising, by weight, 70-80% peptides, 4-5% sugars and 1% sodium chloride. ACTIVITY : Dermatological. MECHANISM OF ACTION : Stimulation of (a) fibroblast proliferation and (b) synthesis of collagen and glycosaminoglycans. Normal fibroblasts were grown in nutrient medium containing 0.1% of a new Spirulina peptide extract. After 48 hours, the absorbance in an MTT assay for fibroblast proliferation was 0.7; compare 0.5 for a control without the extract. After 4 weeks in culture, the collagen content was about 19 Microg/ml and the glycosaminoglycan concentration 3.5 Microg/ml; compare 10 and 2.9 Microg/ml, respectively, in a control.
