Production of solutions of basic aluminum polychlorides (I) and/or polychlorosulfates (II), having a basicity of 50-63 % and an alumina titer of 15-22 wt. %, involves reacting a solution of aluminum chloride with commercial aluminum hydroxide in an autoclave under stirring while increasing the temperature up to a plateau at 160-200 [deg] C, maintaining this temperature for 0.25-4 hours, and filtering (a stabilizer being added in any of these stages). Production of solutions (A) of basic aluminum polychlorides of formula Al(OH) aCl b. dY (I) and/or basic aluminum polychlorosulfates of formula Al(OH) aCl b(SO 4) c. dY (II), having a basicity of 50-63 % and an alumina titer (expressed as Al 2O 3) of 15-22 wt. %, involves: (1) reacting a solution of aluminum chloride (AlCl 3) with commercial aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH) 3) in an autoclave under stirring while increasing the temperature up to a plateau at 160-200 [deg] C, for 60-120 minutes; (2) maintaining this temperature for 0.25-4 hours; and (3) filtering (a stabilizer Y being added in any of these stages). a + b : 3 in (I); a : 3 - b -2c in (II); a - d : positive fractional numbers or integers; a : 1.50-1.89 exclusive; d : 0.001-1.25 exclusive; Y : stabilizer, preferably selected from boron or silicon compounds. An independent claim is included for the solutions (A) obtained by the process.
