The process involves compensating for inertia of vehicle passengers. Distance between the passengers and equipments embarked in front of the passengers in the vehicle is increased, at the time of collision with an obstacle, such as another vehicle, by applying to the passengers a retreat movement by a backward tilt of a seat back (4) with respect to the imminent and/or in progress collision. An independent claim is also included for a system for protecting passengers of a vehicle.
