The method involves controlling a control by a vehicle related event to determine whether an updating of position data is to be undertaken in a memory unit. Data necessary for updating is rendered available to the memory, by an exchange external to a vehicle through a communication line, only after positive completion of the control. User side confirmation is provided after the completion of the control, before the availability of data. The control is controlled if actuality of the data within a selectable geographical area is not below a preset threshold value for the actuality.
