In this method of controlling the operation of a cylinder assembly, the following phases are carried out during the same operating cycle: - a phase of opening to the exhaust (L1); - a first phase of opening to l 'admission (L2) during a compression phase of the piston; and a second intake opening phase (L3) subsequent to the first. The second intake opening phase (L3) begins when the piston passes to a position within the second third of its stroke, in a relaxation phase. The invention also relates to an internal combustion engine operating according to such a method, and a motor vehicle equipped with such an engine.
