The process involves determining an originating station storing a digital content required by a client station, and transmitting the component from the client station to the determined originating station. The required content is transmitted from the determined originating station to the client station. The content required by the client station is then received. Centralized control functions control the execution of the above steps. The step of determining the originating station is controlled by a centralized referencing function (104). The step of transmission of required digital content is controlled by a transmission management function (107). The step of receiving the required content is controlled by a centralized encoding management function. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a system for distributing digital content in a communication network (B) a computer program product, intended to be stored in a memory of a processing unit or on a data carrier storage and to cooperate with a drive of the processing unit, comprising instructions for implementing a process of distributing digital content in a communication network.
