The carrier has two arms (1, 2) articulated at one of their ends, around an axle (3), and comprising gripping units (1a, 2a) at their other end. A hollow sleeve (6) carrying the axle is fixed to a handle (5) raising the arms. The sleeve limits closing of the arms at the time of their raising without billet, such that, at the time of their lowering, the units contact an upper edge (4a) of a billet (4), for being placed on edges (4b) of the billet. The articulated ends placed inside the sleeve are abutted on open ends (6a) of the sleeve.
