The device (4) has an intermediate conveyor (5) extending, on a part of each of its ends (5`, 5``), adjacent to upstream and downstream load conveyors (1, 2). A lateral maintenance unit (6) maintains a load (3) in a cantilevered position on the conveyor (5) while transferring the load between the load conveyors. The maintenance unit parallely extends above the conveyor (5) at a distance lower than height of the load.
