The starter has a spline coupling unit (22) with a toothed wheel adopting to the shape of helical splines at a preset torsional angle. A pinion (6) is moved in axial direction with respect to torque transmitters (4, 5) within a course of pinion. The course and the angle are adjusted so that the pinion on rotation attains a position at which it engages with a crown gear (38), without receiving rotational force of an electric motor (2). The torque transmitters are moved in response to the function of an electromagnetic switch (8) to place and rotate the pinion on an end surface of the crown gear (38) in response to the helical shape.
