The device has a fault detector (330) detecting a defective zone of an optical disc (301) and providing a fault signal. The detector has an accumulator counting the number of error appearances in a data error checking and correction (ECC) block, and a comparator comparing the number to a threshold. An optical head control unit (304) rewrites correct data of the zone towards another zone of the disc when the threshold is exceeded. The data from the optical disc (301) is read by an optical reader (303). The threshold can be preset to allow a distinction between the numbers of correctable and non-correctable errors. An independent claim is also included for a method for recording an optical disc.
