The device has sensors measuring a parameter representing engine performance. A module (24a) stores a model (51) of an empty particle filter. A comparator (53) receives the parameter and performance elaborated by the model to deduce a difference of performance (epsilon), representing performance degradation of the engine, which is delivered to a regeneration phase control unit (55) delivering a control setpoint based on the degradation. An independent claim is also included for the regeneration of a particle filter mounted on an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
