The system has a microprocessor (102), and a non-volatile memory circuit (106) accessible via a data bus and an address bus coupled to the microprocessor. A debugging program allows to position a software breakpoint in the memory circuit by substituting a breakpoint model to a value to be read in the memory circuit. A software breakpoint management unit (SBMU) (110) manages the breakpoints positioned in the circuit. An independent claim is also included for a method for inserting a software breakpoint destined to be used in a memory circuit.
