The system has a portable terminal (6) e.g. mobile telephone, with a speed sensor (86) and a proximity detector (72) for controlling a GSM transceiver (60) to trigger transmission of identification and/or authentication data of a user towards an access control unit (10) when the terminal is found inside a geographical perimeter predefined around a gate. The control unit allows or prohibits the opening of the gate based on the data. An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling access to a geographical space protected by a gate.
