The invention relates to a portable device for detecting fluorescent particles excited in the visible range to enable the authentication of products. The apparatus comprises: an excitation light source (2) provided with at least one light-emitting diode or a laser for producing a focused light beam; a housing (1) for respectively housing the light source (2) and means for electrically powering the light source (2); and compact optical means integrated or not in the housing (1) allowing the user to instantly view the fluorescence of the marked elements excited by means of the light source (2) .The apparatus is used as a field detector to authenticate and trace products containing a secret marking by fluorescent particles.
