A new material for the storage of hydrogen comprises a balanced system between a magnesium and nitrogen alloy and the corresponding hydride, said system corresponding more particularly to the formula: Mg 3 N 2 = Mg (NH 2) 2.The material may comprise in addition, in a minor proportion, at least one transition metal of groups 3 to 12 of the periodic table of the elements selected from Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pd.
