The mechanism includes fixed (1) and moving (5) jaws in a single block with the moving jaw guided relative to the fixed one by two columns in perpendicular planes. The jaws are opened by springs, with the travel of the moving jaw on opening controlled by two stops (10, 11) that govern lengthwise and transverse positions. When the jaw assembly is fitted to the machine tool it is fixed in place by a single screw, or two at the most.
