The stretcher plate (2) manufacturing procedure includes two stamping stages using different dies and matrices. In the first stage the die creates an annular recess in the underside of the stretcher plate and a central projection on the upper surface. In the second another die (24) punches through the centre of the annular recess and forces the central projection into a second matrix (26) to form a fixing peg (28) on the plate's upper surface. In subsequent operations the end of each fixing peg is compressed after passing through a hole in another component to create a rivetted joint.
