An ultra wideband wireless information transmission system is disclosed. Data is encoded using the time delay between a data pulse and a reference pulse. This encoding method is sometimes known as Pulse Position Modulation (PPM). According to the present invention at least two data pulses share a single reference pulse. This system is therefore called Reference Sharing (RS-UWB). Preferably a pseudo-random noise (PN) carrier is used. In one embodiment 3-state information can be transmitted using RS-doublets, each comprising a reference pulse flanked by two data pulses.
